Housing

There are many different types of cages designed for hamsters, from wire cages with plastic bases to the Rotastak type with various tubes combining different areas. Each type has its advantages and disadvantages, but whatever cage you choose, be aware that hamsters are great escape artists! They can squeeze through amazingly small gaps so, particularly if you are choosing dwarf hamsters, a solid-type cage is probably the best option.

Hamsters love to climb and dig so provide them with plenty of toys and activities in their cage. A wheel is a must, although make sure that it is solid, without plastic rungs that the hamster could catch it's leg in. Provide a good depth of wood shavings on the floor for the hamster to dig in.

A water bottle should be provided for the hamster to drink. Water bowls are not recommended as they can be easily spilt and mess the cage up.

The cage should be cleaned thoroughly once a week, with the toilet corner cleaned more frequently. Remove any rotting food from the food store but replace the rest and try to replace everything so that the hamster feels at home.

Place the cage out of draughts and direct sunlight and provide a branch of wood for the hamster to gnaw on to keep his teeth at a good length.
