Two guinea pigs.Guinea pigs are lovely little animals. They are originally from the Andes in Peru and there are still wild cavies living there. They are considered a delicacy in their native Peru but have not been widely used for food elsewhere.

Guinea pigs are very vocal with a wide range of squeaks and grunts. They are generally quite docile but can be easily scared - they are, after all, prey animals.

Guinea pig young must be among the cutest newborns. They are born fully-furred after a long gestation period compared to other rodents and can eat solid food from birth. Breeding females must be bred from before 1 year of age, otherwise their pelvis fuses permanently, leading to birthing problems. After giving birth, the mother comes on heat again after a few hours but it is very unhealthy for her to be constantly pregnant.
