Owning a dog is a huge commitment. Many will live over 10 years and need care and affection for their whole life.
Before going any further, ask yourself:
- Why do I want a dog?
- Will I still be able to care for your dog in 12-14 years time?
- Do I have the time to commit to training, exercise, grooming, etc. every day of the year?
- Can I afford the costs involved?
- initial purchase cost - around £100-£800
- food - around £4.50-£8.00 per week
- bedding, toys, other equipment
- identification disc, collar and lead (compulsory in the UK)
- vet’s bills for vaccination, microchipping, sickness and accidents, neutering and routine health care
- insurance cover and ‘excess’ payments for each claim you make for a new illness or injury
- boarding kennel fees
- grooming fees
- training classes
- Does my landlord, housing association, etc. allow pets?
- What will I do with my dog when I go on holiday?
- Is my garden secure?
Do I really want to pick up dog mess every day?
- Will my dog be left alone all day? - dog's are pack animals and do not like being alone
If you understand all these points and still think that a dog is for you, please continue to choosing a dog.
